In the wake of a major emergency, it may be necessary to distribute life sustaining commodities such as food and water to a large number of people. It is estimated that in the event of a catastrophic earthquake in the bay area we may need to provide 8,000,000 emergency meals and 16,000,000 liters of water every day! This will be accomplished by setting up a large number of Commodity Points of Distribution (CPODs). FEMA has devised a very efficient and organized CPOD system which has been tested many times after disasters such as the Gulf Coast hurricanes. FEMA and other organizations may be able to provide and deliver much of the commodities but it is largely up to the local jurisdictions to distribute them to the public. This is a very labor intensive process and will be a very important role for CERTs. This class will give you a basic understanding of CPODs and your role in their operation. Topics will include:
- What is a COPD?
- CPOD Types
- CPOD Layout
- CPOD Worker Roles
- CPOD Operation
- Forms and Paperwork
- Interaction with the EOC
This will include both classroom and some manipulative exercise. Please bring your CERT PPE to class.
